1. Why should I join the Weight & Risk Factor
Management, an HMR™ Program and not another weight loss program?
Good question. Studies show that the majority of
patients with a significant amount of weight to lose join programs that
result, unlike ours, in only minimal weight loss. Further, unlike our
Program, other weight loss programs do not have an effective,
experienced, weight loss maintenance phase. Again, as Dr. Motto says,
“Weight loss is not a cure for overweight and obesity, but only the
first step in a lifelong weight management effort.”

2. Is the program doable?
The program is most certainly doable as attested to
by the many patients who have successfully completed it and not only
lost an average of 40-60 lbs. but kept it off (Jennifer’s testimonials). Again, the experience of finally
losing a goodly amount of weight is very motivating and the major factor
in the program’s “doability.” Additionally, our team is always there to
provide support and help patients succeed.

3. Will I be hungry?
You might experience hunger the first few days after
you begin the program as your body adjusts. Because the meal
replacements are very satisfying, hunger has not been a major concern.
In addition, patients are encouraged to take as many meal replacements
as they need to satisfy their appetite and to stay with the diet. The
number of replacements you are prescribed is the minimum number you
should consume. You can go above the 800 or 1,200 calorie limit, so long
as you eat only HMR™ products. Dr. Motto will discuss with you the
minimum number of calories you must consume daily (never less than 800)
depending on your starting weight and the presence of additional medical
or other problems. For example, a patient who weighs over 300 lbs. would
not be advised by Dr. Motto to consume the same number of daily calories
as a patient who weighs 200 lbs. Your diet will be individualized for
you.

4. Why can’t I eat “regular food” other than
fruits and vegetables when I join your
Program?
The only way for you to lose weight is to take in
fewer calories than you need to maintain your weight (i.e. you must
deficit calories). This is very difficult to do in our environment where
lots of “regular food” is always so and too available. Scientific
studies have consistently demonstrated that a structured “no decision”
weight loss plan using meal replacements (which are “real food” in
pre-packaged, calorie controlled portions) is the most effective way to
achieve significant weight loss in a timely and motivating way. While
losing pounds, you will see that you can actually lose if you
successfully restrict calories. Proving to yourself that you can do it,
plus the techniques you’ll learn from our team, will carry over into
Maintenance and help ensure that you will keep your lost weight off.
“After all,” asks Dr. Motto, “isn’t looking good and being healthier
what keeping your weight off is all about?”

5. My friends and family say that I’ll regain all my
weight when I go back to eating regular food. What do you have to say
about that?
No, you need not regain your lost weight! This is a
very popular myth about successful dieting and weight loss in general.
First of all, as Dr. Motto says, “Diets do work but only if you change
your behavior and lifestyle to reflect the realities of your lower
weight.” But, to do this you will need our help. This is why we strongly
advise that you join our Maintenance Phase after you lose weight. During
Maintenance, we will work with you to help you continue to practice the
behavior and lifestyle changes that Dr. Motto talks about. Although this
will not guarantee that you will keep your weight off, continuing in our
Maintenance Phase will give you the best chance to do this.

6. Is the HMR™ diet safe?
Yes, the HMR™ meal replacements – shakes, entrees,
and bars – are “real food” in measured, prepackaged portions without any
medications or additives and consist of high-quality ingredients
containing protein, carbohydrate, and fat, plus good amounts of
potassium, calcium, and other elements. With the accompanying
multivitamin tablets, the meal replacements contain 150% of USDA’s daily
recommended vitamins and minerals. The quality of the HMR™ products
(which our patients report are the best tasting among all supplement
products), in a minimum amount of 800 to 1,200 calories per day, plus
medical supervision, help assure the safety of our HMR™ Program.

7. If Weight & Risk Factor Management, an HMR™ Program
is so safe, why will I need a medical evaluation before and medical
supervision during your Program?
This is an elective, very effective weight loss
program and as such, your safety is our main concern. In and of
themselves, overweight and obesity are associated with increased health
risks. When you add obesity’s associated medical conditions – diabetes,
heart disease, sleep apnea, arthritis, sudden death, high blood pressure
to name a few, plus the medications and treatments for these conditions
– medical supervision is advisable during effective weight loss (e.g.
with weight loss the dosage of medication needs to be monitored and
often changed). Using your starting weight and general health risk, Dr.
Motto will determine how much medical supervision you need. Dr. Motto
recommends that you have a primary care physician with whom he can work,
especially if you have a medical condition other than obesity.

8. I’ve heard Weight & Risk Factor Management, an HMR™
Program is expensive. Is it?
Our HMR™ Program provides intensive services – weekly
M.D. and nurse visits, bi-weekly laboratory testing, weekly group
sessions with experienced behavioral health educators, personalized
coaching, additional weekly phone contacts – all to ensure your safety
and success. Considering the intensity and comprehensiveness of the
weekly services you will be receiving, we believe our costs are
manageable and not excessive as well as in line with such weekly
services as personal trainers or counselors. The cost of the HMR™ meal
replacements will to a great extent be offset by the fact that you will
not be buying food from grocery stores or restaurants. When all of this
is taken into consideration, our Program’s cost will more than be
covered by your attainment of better health and the good feeling you’ll
have taking control of your life.

9. Will my insurance cover any of Weight & Risk Factor
Management, an HMR™ Program’s costs?
This will be discussed during your initial
appointment orientation with a member of our staff.
